What is one speaking activity that is a great way to make students talk in English classrooms?

    Greg Brodbeck

    Try the “speed dating” game.

Each student receives a list of questions to provoke conversation, or discussion of something they have read.

Students stand facing each other in two concentric circles.

Each student talks with the student facing them.

The teacher calls “Question 1!” Students have a given amount of time to discuss that question together—a minute, or three minutes—whatever is appropriate.

The teacher rings a bell when time is up, and calls “Question 2!” Students in the inner circle move to the right, so that each person has a new partner to talk to.

Continue this down the list of questions.

(You can follow this up by having students then go back to their seats and write down answers to the questions.)
